Whenever someone new gets in contact with us wanting to train with us at the studio, we generally start with a face to face chat so we can learn more about them, their priorities and what they'd like to get out of training with us.
During this conversation, we like to spend a little bit of time talking about both long-term and short-term goals.
Depending on the person, a long-term goal might be to lose 20 pounds. and let's say for example, that based on their current weight, body type and activity level, we do a little calculation and tell them that it could take up to six months.
The problem is that, for a lot of people, six months can feel like a long time, and it can be hard for someone who is just starting their fitness journey, to wrap their head around such a lengthy timeline.
As coaches, this can be a bit of a double edged sword as on one hand, we want them to understand what they’re getting into and have a realistic time frame in mind, but on the other, the last thing we want is for them to get discouraged or feel it’s too daunting.
So in order to avoid this, we ask them to focus on something a little more short term. One of our most popular programs is our 28 Day Kickstart, so that always seems to be a good place to start. We’ll usually ask the following question
“What improvements do you want to make in the next four weeks, and what would have to change or happen to make it a reality?”
Losing 5-10 pounds, having a flatter stomach, feeling younger or having more energy are some really great goals, which can be accomplished in a short time frame, such as the first month or so provided you follow a well-designed fitness and nutrition plan about 80% of the time (because, nobody’s perfect … and you don’t have to be in order to make some really fantastic improvements).
So with a new month around the corner, we thought we'd ask you the same question:
Where do YOU want to be with your health and fitness four weeks from now, and what has to change or happen for you to get there?
Give it some thought and reply back to let us know. We’d love to hear what you’re shooting for and brainstorm some ways that we might be able to help.
